home remedies for joints/arthritis?
ok, my horse horse has early signs of arthritis…and I know there are plenty of supplements out there, but I would prefer to have some kind of home remedy to give to him. (i’m all about natural things, although I will use some like electrolytes) I know that flaxseed is good for their joints, and I’ve heard that apple cider vinegar is, but my horse is picky with taste, so I know he wouldn’t eat that.
Any other ideas?
Thanks
please note..my horse is a stud…so only has a small paddock he can go into.
There is no way to put him into a bigger paddock as all of the fences are electric tape fences, and he will break them.
He is only in for now for feedings, and overnight since it gets so cold where he is.
For an arthritic horse, turnout is the best thing you can do. Give him turnout as much as possible, 24/7 turnout if you can, only stalling when necessary. The exercise helps keeps him limber and will really help slow the progression of arthritis.
Glucosaine isn’t really a “home remedy” but it is natural and it’s great for the joints.
There’s also Cetyl-M which comes from a type of nut and is excellent for horse’s joints. Cetyl-M contains MSM and glucosamine as well as vitamin C. It’s probably the best supplement out there for joints because it has everything in it.
Corn oil, around 1/2 cup added in the grain, can be great for the joints. It also has the nice side effects of giving them healthy hooves and a shiny coat.
Rheumatoid Arthritis? What treatments have helped you best?
I posted this for a friend who is running out of options in hopes that somebody might know of something he hasn’t tried. This batch of answers offers a very wide range in treatement ideas, and I don’t know what to pick as best answer, and have decided to leave it for a vote. I would like to thank everyone for thier participation and points of view, and have emailed your answers to him, in the hope he might find something he hasn’t tried yet. Also thanks for the good wishes. There are a couple days left on this question, so I will also leave it here in hopes that someone else may come up with something. For those of you who are dealing with this awful condition, I wish you good healing, and hope the treatments you are using will continue to work well for you….
If you want to go with the natural products, ( perfect choice).First you need a natural anti inflammatory, Bromelaine, (pineapple pill).Omega 3 , and Glucosamine and Condroityne, You have to take all of them at once.
My father had this problem, and I gave him those supplements, and he never complain again.

Can anyone suggest a good treatment for arthritis in dogs?
My Chesapeake (only three years old) has developed arthritis in her right, rear knee. Can anyone suggest treatments to help prevent or treat the pain and reduced mobility? thanks
You can give glucosamine/chondroitin 500/400. My lab weighs 100 lbs, I give him a dose of 1500/1200 (3 pills) every morning & every night.
The next step is to go to an Rx that the vet prescribes. The one’s that we use in our office are Deramaxx & Rimadyl. The Deramaxx is the most amazing medication I have ever seen. It takes a dog that can barely get up off the floor & they’re acting like a puppy again in just 2 days. The down side is they are expensive. I would try the gluc/chon first. It’s something you keep them on.
Does a pain management doctor specialize in medication or what?
I’m curious because I’m having back surgery next week and my primary has been prescribing my meds. We talked and he wants me to find a specialist for meds after surgery. Who can I go to, my surgeon is 4 hours away so he said find someone local is that Pain Management or is that something else.
I’ve been in a pain management program for a spine injury for about 7 years. I’ve had a couple of spine operations.
They treat chronic pain with varies methods. PT, medications, whatever they think will help.
Here is something I do everyday, and have for the past 7 years that has really help me become part of the process.
I keep a daily journal about my pain. Nothing fancy, I use a seno pad for each 3 months or as needed that was if needed me or the doctors can review the info. I see my doctor every 3 months. I record:
When I hurt
Where I hurt
How bad the pain is on a scale of 1-10
for me it’s also what kind of pain, nerve, muscle
How the pain is effecting your daily life. What things you can’t do because of it.
It’s hard to communicate with your doctor when you only have a few minutes so the journal helps the doctor better understand the problem and what the best treatments may be.

Is giving birth in water a good source of pain management?
We are expecting our 4th child very soon. I have had epidurals all my other births, and wanted to try something new this time. I talked with my doctor about different kinds of Pain Management and she recommended water birth. This hospital does offer it, and I was wondering how any one else experience was with this, and if it really does help with the pain. Thanks!
Its an excellent source of pain management
whats the best home remedy for my arthritis?
rageful arthritis. i take vicodin usually because i have it pretty bad and i am very young for this problem. i also take aleve. i take 3 hot showers a day to calm it down and as recommended for a recent digestive surgery. im wondering what over the counter drug people feel works good for them, as well as any homeopathic remedies (walk in a circle backwards kind of stuff too, ill take whatever i can get)
also… could this even be arthritis? my doctor told me thats what it is, but he also thinks i dont have a blood pressure problem when my BP is 156/ 109 …idiot. i am in the process of getting a new doc, just wanted some advice to bridge the gap!!
thanks… no idiots please!
As a sufferer myself, especially before it rains or there is a change in the barometric pressure, I understand the pain of arthritis. I have greatly improved my knee function buy taking ginger root, devils claw and a good fish oil supplement. Icing the joint in the evening before bedtime is priceless. Research this for yourself and good luck.

Pain ManagemenT?
I RECENTLY TRIPPED AND TOOK A SERIOUS FALL. AFTER WAITING 3 DAYS, MY HAND BLOATING UP TO THE SIZE IF AN ORANGE I FINALLY WENT TO THE HOSPITAL (IM NOT A DOCTOR KIND OF PERSON) I THOUGHT I JUST SPRAINED ME HAND. AFTER HAVING X RAYS TAKEN IT WAS FOUND THAT I HAD BROKEN TWO BONES IN MY HAND. NOW TYPINING WITH ONE HAND IS A REAL BITCH.
ANYWAY IN THE HOSPITAL THE GAVE ME 10 5 MG PERCOCETS FOR THE PAIN. AFTER 2 DAYS THE PAIN WAS SO INTRNSE I WENT TO AN ORTHOPEDIC DR. WHO PRESDRIBED ME VICODEN EXTRA STRENGTH. IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO AND IF SO WHAT? I AM STLL IN HORRIBLE PAIN AND FEEL HELPLESS. PLEASE HELP ME ANYONE.
They are very similar drugs but Percocets are a bit stronger than Vicodin. The generic for Perc is Oxycodone, and the generic for Vics is Hydrocodone. I would try using ice packs to help with the swelling and the pain. Also keep it elevated to stop the throbbing, needs to be higher than your heart.
What is a stronger drug for pain management?
I am in sever chronic pain. I can not take anti-inflamitories / /NSAIDS for other medical reasons. I have tried vicodin, tylenol #3 and Darvoset. The first two do nothing, the Darvoset at its highest does just barely helps, but not enough. I am getting bounced around with refferals within my insurance plan and everyone I see says they can not treat the kind of pain I have, that I need a pain clinic. I went there and they said they will only do injections into the joints and that is all they do, so prescriptions or Pain Management. I feel like I am stuck. I have called all the dr’s office, been to the urgent care and the pain dr, called my medical group and called my insurance – everyon tells me to talk to someone else!!!!!!!!! I am in so much pain and frustration. So, I was wondering if anyone knows anything else that might help me. The pain is from osteoarthritis in my hips.
Of course, there are many other pain medications out there. Percocet, Dilaudid, MS-Contin, Fentanyl patches…..many, many. Are you a candidate for hip replacement? That would be a much better option than just taking drugs. Your hips are just going to continue to deteriorate. They need to be replaced. You really need to talk to your orthopedic doctor or get another one to discuss this option with you.

What are the treatments for rhuematoid arthritis?
It depends on what type and how bad it is. See a Rhumy as soon as possible!! The longer you wait the worse it gets and the harder it is to slow down the disease. Trust me, I waited and now I’m in extreme pain and cannot get the flare up under control (and I’m only in my early 30′s). While you are waiting for the meds to kick in, try getting a lot of rest (doesn’t necessarily mean you have to sleep), non-impact exercise (water workouts are wonderful), and don’t ignore your body. Good luck!!

I go to pain management and I took something without a prescription?
I took a half of a 10mg xr ritalin on sunday morning, trying to get my self going. I went to see my pain management doctor today and I had to give a urine sample. Do you think it has had time to flush from my system? I figured they was just seeing if I was taking the meds that i have been prescribed. Anybody have any comments?
Pain Management doctors test for everything and while I do not know the half life of this drug, I am guessing it may still have been detectable in your system. If so, you violated the contract you signed when you entered pain management and you may be released from the practice. I know that my PM doc checks for lots of different drugs, including things like Ritalin, to make sure that I am not getting meds from any other doctors that he does not know about. If you have a prescription for it, you may be able to talk to them about it if the drug test comes back positive. If not, then you may be looking for a new PM doctor
