Is percocet a drug that is prescribed by pain management doctors?

I have a herniated disc in my back. It has caused me lots of pain for the last three years. I had a tooth removed last week and the doctor gave me percocet. This killed all my back pain. I am going to begin pain management soon. Is percocet a drug that is prescribed by Pain Management doctors?

Please, please, please think twice about using this for your back pain. It can so often lead to dependence and disability. If you are seeing a good pain management doctor, they will want you to try non-narcotics to help your back pain. I am really sorry you are having this pain, but please don’t make it worse by becoming dependent on a narcotic pain medication.

Who knows something about pain pain management anesthesiology?

I’m a medical student in first year, and I’m leaning towards pain management anesthesiology. What are some of the positives, drawbacks of this career? Also what is the common consensus on where this specialty is going in the next fifteen years?

Pain specialists (which do not have to be anesthesiologists) are in great demand and are becoming more important due to the number of people who need pain control and the number abusing opioids. Pain management more easily allows a doctor to serve his patients, even patients with a drug abuse problems. Some aspects of using opioids like tolerance, physical dependency, withdrawal, and addiction are commonly misunderstood by most doctors so they may use medications inappropriately. A lot of people, for example, think that physical dependency is addiction so if a doctor goes on vacation and a patient runs out of medicine he might go into horrible withdrawal then some doctors would brand that as addiction when it is not. Also techniques involving adjacent drugs (muscle relaxants, NSAID’s, benzodiazepines, amphetamines…) are going to be much better understood by a specialist.

An anestesologist would be able to preform things like an epidural steroid injection and use of these types of procedures is growing.

So there is no doubt that now and in 15 years there will be a huge demand.

That brings me to the major downside, opiophobia. Even with a huge demand there are not many doctors going into Pain Management because doctors are afraid that they could lose their license or even be jailed. Like all phobia’s the fear is irrational but there certainly is worry. But a good pain specialist documents everything, gets prior medical records, has all patients sign a pain contract, does random drug testing, and typically provides referral’s to psychiatry or psychology for mood disorders or substance abuse and any other type of help a patient may need.

But still there will be drug seekers trying to con your for drugs and you will likely fall for it sometimes.

But aside from the demand the big positive is being able to help people in pain who may only be able to live a normal life with treatment. Pain is completely debilitating and costs the economy billions. You might also be helping people who have not been able to get any help before (due to opiophobia) or people who truly need pain control but currently or previously abused opioids. People with a history of opioid abuse are most likely to not get pain management and you might actually help recovering addicts avoid going back to illegal drug use to help with pain, not the high.

Pain ManagemenT?

I RECENTLY TRIPPED AND TOOK A SERIOUS FALL. AFTER WAITING 3 DAYS, MY HAND BLOATING UP TO THE SIZE IF AN ORANGE I FINALLY WENT TO THE HOSPITAL (IM NOT A DOCTOR KIND OF PERSON) I THOUGHT I JUST SPRAINED ME HAND. AFTER HAVING X RAYS TAKEN IT WAS FOUND THAT I HAD BROKEN TWO BONES IN MY HAND. NOW TYPINING WITH ONE HAND IS A REAL BITCH.

ANYWAY IN THE HOSPITAL THE GAVE ME 10 5 MG PERCOCETS FOR THE PAIN. AFTER 2 DAYS THE PAIN WAS SO INTRNSE I WENT TO AN ORTHOPEDIC DR. WHO PRESDRIBED ME VICODEN EXTRA STRENGTH. IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO AND IF SO WHAT? I AM STLL IN HORRIBLE PAIN AND FEEL HELPLESS. PLEASE HELP ME ANYONE.

They are very similar drugs but Percocets are a bit stronger than Vicodin. The generic for Perc is Oxycodone, and the generic for Vics is Hydrocodone. I would try using ice packs to help with the swelling and the pain. Also keep it elevated to stop the throbbing, needs to be higher than your heart.

What is a stronger drug for pain management?

I am in sever chronic pain. I can not take anti-inflamitories / /NSAIDS for other medical reasons. I have tried vicodin, tylenol #3 and Darvoset. The first two do nothing, the Darvoset at its highest does just barely helps, but not enough. I am getting bounced around with refferals within my insurance plan and everyone I see says they can not treat the kind of pain I have, that I need a pain clinic. I went there and they said they will only do injections into the joints and that is all they do, so prescriptions or Pain Management. I feel like I am stuck. I have called all the dr’s office, been to the urgent care and the pain dr, called my medical group and called my insurance – everyon tells me to talk to someone else!!!!!!!!! I am in so much pain and frustration. So, I was wondering if anyone knows anything else that might help me. The pain is from osteoarthritis in my hips.

Of course, there are many other pain medications out there. Percocet, Dilaudid, MS-Contin, Fentanyl patches…..many, many. Are you a candidate for hip replacement? That would be a much better option than just taking drugs. Your hips are just going to continue to deteriorate. They need to be replaced. You really need to talk to your orthopedic doctor or get another one to discuss this option with you.

What will a pain management doctor do next?

I’m just curious. I went to my Pain Management doctor and was prescribed Lyrica and Vicodin twice a day. After about a week I had to stop the Lyrica because it is making me so lethargic and feeling like I can’t even focus on anything. So I had to take more than two Vicodin a day and I ran out. Do you think they will prescribe more if I call them and explain or do you think they will make me wait till my next monthly visit?

I would hope that they will give you more Vicodin especially if you let them know what happened with the Lyrica. However be prepared for them to tell you that they want you to give Lyrica a chance again for a longer period of time. That may happen or not, just thought I would let you know that there is that possibility.

I’m on Lyrica and it took me about 3 weeks until I was able to get beyond the lethargic stage and now I function normally and my pain is better. From what my doctor says, it is normal for it to take about 2-4 weeks to get the full benefit of the Lyrica and get beyond the lethargic and foggy state.

I had the same thing with Methadone when I was on it, for the first 2-3 weeks all I did was sleep, however once I got used to it I was fine.

Good Luck and Take care!

Michelle

I am looking for alternative treatments for Reumatoid Arthritis?

I was diagnosed with RA 6yrs ago, I am currently taking Methotrexate and Humira. They are maintaining a low level of comfort, but it’s better than nothing, I am just curious what some other people are trying. Is anyone using a herbal remedy that is working, a certain diet that is helping them. My current treatments work, but it would’nt hurt to have some more options.

I’m 35, female, have had AS and RA since about 10 yrs. old. I have been on methotrexate, and lots of other things through the years that I can’t even remember. I am doing really super, right now, and am on NOTHING prescription. 2 years ago I had a total hip joint replacement and have occassional achiness, nothing to comoplain about. I started out seeing a naturopathic dr. years ago and she got me on track with supplements. Now I see an accupuncturist and have an occassional massage. However, the best thing by far that I have done is yoga. I love it. It makes me feel strong and limber and gives me energy. I feel better now than I did as a child. I’ve been doing it for 4 years, both at class and on my own. I attend a class that is for Level 1, beginning, and have a really good insntructor that takes her time in teaching you modifications for if you have neck, back, knee problems. It can be done in a very gentle way and is very adaptable for if you have a disability. I would recommend starting out with a class if you are interested. On your own would be hard, to start with. I do supplements, most all are ones commonly known to help with arthritis. Glucosamine, condroitin, fish oil, cal, mag, potass, vit. e, b complex.. Also, I try to steer clear of sugar. That’s a big help for me, but we are all different. Most of all, I just live by the motto: move it or lose it. Also a note on methotrexate. My aunt who is 68 has been on it for almost 20 years. She has severe lung problems associated with it. Reoccurring pnemonia, bronchitis, cough that never goes away. Over all it has probably not helped prevent any of her disfigurement. Her hands and feet are horribly crippled. It has helped with the pain, of course, but she wishes that she had been doing more of what I am doing when she was younger. She feels it is too late now.

Pain management?

How should I approach a doctor to prescribe me painkillers? I’ve had chronic pain in my back, hips, knees, and wrists for about 3 years now. In addition I was diagnosed with CMT when I was a child. I’ve taken just about everything other than narcotics ( pain patches, anti-inflammatory medicine, various high-doses of acetaminophen and ibuprofen, etc etc.) But when I asked my doctor about trying a painkiller, he told me I was just looking to get high, and I have no real business taking them. Now, I can understand that a Pain Management doctor will see his/her fair share of junkies, but I had been seeing him for months prior to this, and it was the first time I mentioned it. Needless to say I will NOT be seeing that doctor again, but I will still need to address my pain. So, when I do see another doctor, how should I go about getting something that actually works?

I would advise you to go in, describe your pain, and where it hurts. Then you should judge your average pain from one to ten,( one being hardly no pain, and ten being the worst pain you have ever experienced.) Give him a list of everything you have taken for pain, and tell him the medication has not helped with your discomfort. Ask him if there are any alternatives, but do not go right out and ask for painkillers, because doctors will automatically become suspicious.
I hope this advice helps, and you get some relief from your pain. Good luck.
