Arthritis treatments or advice?

I have heard that there are foods you should avoid. Any one have any advice?
The joints in my fingers have become inflamed in the past couple of months. I have suffered with my ankles and wrists too. I want to do all can to stop my symptoms getting worse. I’m only 31! This isn’t fair!!!!!

Sorry to hear at so young an age, that you are suffering with arthritis.

My father has identified cheese as being a real problem for him as he can be left virtually unable to move within 6 – 12 hours after eating it and it can take a couple of days to right itself.

In terms of food affecting you, the only way to try and identify the problem foods, if there are any, would be to keep a RECORD of what your eating on a daily basis along with how your arthritis is on a daily basis. If foods are a problem then hopefully by doing this you could make a connection between items eaten and your suffering.

All the best to you.

Is it arthritis? What are the types of treatments a person can expect?

A person’s foot starts to turn in then their knee becomes very painful and feels as though it wants to give way. If the person bends the knee like when sitting on your leg in a chair, or when on hands and knees in the floor then goes to stand up–the knee doesn’t straighten completely without hurting really really bad. What is causing this??? What kind of treatments can this person expect when they go to the doctor??

The only person qualified to answer your question is a doctor.

What are the treatments for rhuematoid arthritis?

It depends on what type and how bad it is. See a Rhumy as soon as possible!! The longer you wait the worse it gets and the harder it is to slow down the disease. Trust me, I waited and now I’m in extreme pain and cannot get the flare up under control (and I’m only in my early 30′s). While you are waiting for the meds to kick in, try getting a lot of rest (doesn’t necessarily mean you have to sleep), non-impact exercise (water workouts are wonderful), and don’t ignore your body. Good luck!!

We just found out the stray dog we adopted has arthritis, any safe home remedies?

He is a great dog and we want him to be comfortable, but if there is a cheaper way of helping him I’d love to hear about it. The medication the vet gave up is kind of spendy.
He is a 100 lb lab, a little over weight, we are working on that, but he is just a really big dog.
He has trouble getting up, but once he is up he runs like crazy! We aren’t sure how old he is, he has a young face and a young personality but his body shows signs of age.

I can’t comment on the Omega 3–I know it’s good for dogs but don’t know what research is out there on arthritis and dogs.

1. Lose the extra weight. It makes a huge difference in terms of stressing the joints and making the problem worse. Plus it shortens a dog’s life. So that’s to start with.

2. Look for a food that includes Glucoasmine (usually Chondroitin comes with it). There are plenty of dog foods that add that. And you can get treats (Wellness Chicken strips and treats called “Happy Hips”) that come with G&C as the only additive to the chicken. Even though my dog is only 3 years old, I routinely give this to him because we compete in agility which stresses the joints. I did this because I developed knee problems as a former soccer player and my orthopedics doctor recommended this for me as an alternative to surgery. I researched it and not only was there good research on it for humans with knee problems (less so with arthritis) but also good research on dogs and arthritis.

3. Treat your dog like an athlete. Warm him up before doing vigorous activity (like running or a long hike or 45 minute walk). Give him a massage (I’m serious–there are some great resources on this and go to any major agility trial and you’ll see at least one professional dog masseuse or holistic vet set up giving massages to dogs competing at the trial. This will not only help him cope with arthritis but will help build the bond between you and your dog, increase his ability to relax and mellow out, and improve his overall health.

Any home remedies for arthritis, fibromyalgia?

my mommy suffers from arthritis and i wish i could help her, are there any grandma’s on here that know some really good home remedies??

How many informative answers!
What I have to add is very few, although I retain that indispensable.
As the conventional teratment of this disease remains unsatisfactory, among the various alternative treatments used there are also the following:
1. S-adenosylmethionine(SAMe) that is used in the treatment of both osteoarthritis and depression and it is for oral use.
2. 5-hydroxy-tryptofan(5-HTP). It is a serotonin precursor that has been administered for the treatment of depression, migraine, headaches and obesity.
There is a study showing an improvement of the situation of the patients who had taken this medication in 30 days.
3. Capsaicin. It is containd in hot pepper and it is FDA approved for postherpetic neuralgia. It is for local use and is a topical analgesic and can be the costituent of plasters, as well.
4. blue-green algae. Their meccanism of action, is not completely known, yet.
If you need more information about the dosage forms, you have to read the complete articles and of course refer to your doctor.
What you have to take always into consideration, are the drug interactions among pharmaceutical and natural therapies.

All the best

I go to pain management and I took something without a prescription?

I took a half of a 10mg xr ritalin on sunday morning, trying to get my self going. I went to see my pain management doctor today and I had to give a urine sample. Do you think it has had time to flush from my system? I figured they was just seeing if I was taking the meds that i have been prescribed. Anybody have any comments?

Pain Management doctors test for everything and while I do not know the half life of this drug, I am guessing it may still have been detectable in your system. If so, you violated the contract you signed when you entered pain management and you may be released from the practice. I know that my PM doc checks for lots of different drugs, including things like Ritalin, to make sure that I am not getting meds from any other doctors that he does not know about. If you have a prescription for it, you may be able to talk to them about it if the drug test comes back positive. If not, then you may be looking for a new PM doctor

How effective is pain management anyway?

I’m scheduled to have VATS surgery on my lung (bullectomy and pleurodesis) and on my diaphragm, and I think it will be a lot of pain, not to mention the chest tubes. So I’d really like to know how effective Pain Management is. Is it given intravenously, through epidural or through oral medication?

i am 28 years ol, had a lobectomy of my lower left lobe just this past november. It was a freak lung tumor out of no where, and it had to be removed. I didn have vats, i had the full on surgery, they cut open my back and removed it that way (they had to, thought they might have to remove the whole lung). so now i have the nice big scar on my back. It was scary, i wont lie. I had a epidural, and man i will tell you now if you have the option for one, take it. I was afraid to have it at first, but then was so happy i had it after wards. It really was very effective in controlling the pain – which was horrendous. i had that in intensive care for about 2 days, then they took it out and i had an IV of morphine on a timer. That was great too – I did still feel pain, but it was very bearable with the morphine and the epidural. After another 2 days i then stepped down to where i had to push the button for the morphine when i felt i needed it, then down to the most miserable, the pain pills. That was the worst part becasue that is when i remember the pain the most. The nurses are nice and slow to bring them to you, and they are not as good as the straight morphine. I had a chest tube for about 2 weeks, that was not fun, but it was bearable too. More of an inconvenience than anything, sort of painful but nothing to where i was crying in pain or anything. So yes, i really can say the epidural was a heaven send – but then again im not exactly sure it will be the same – kind of different surgery.
