Risk Factors of Body Lice

Body Lice are spread by direct person-to-person contact or through contact with contaminated bedding, clothing, towels, etc. The nits of the body louse are laid in the seams of bedding or clothing, where they will stay most of the time. On occasion, nits may be attached to body hair. It is important to remember that Body Lice are no longer a common infestation in the United States ; however, you may be at risk if you vacation in an area where countries are undeveloped and poverty and sanitation are issues. In short, the most common risk factors for contracting Body Lice are:

  • Crowded living conditions
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Infrequent changing or laundering of clothing
  • Traveling to foreign countries where the above are present
