How bad is my Carpal Tunnel? Can it cause the hand to swell?
Just realized a few days ago that I have carpal tunnel. At first I thought it was bad circulation at night, then I talked to a couple of folks who had the surgery did some research online, and I definitely have it.
It’s been getting worse for about a year now. I can’t do the phalen test for more than a couple seconds before it’s too much discomfort. And I’ve lost alot of strength in my right hand. Left hand is bad also, but not as bad as the right.
Right hand is swollen for several hours after waking. I’m only sleeping a couple hours a night due to the tingling/pins and needles/ numbness.
Anyway, gonna try to get into the doc’s office today.
Will he want to try splints first, or can I just have the surgery? I know proper steps have to be taken, but I just want my normal life back!
I had the surgery yesterday on both hands, I’m already typing! First step, my doctor sent me to a neurologist for testing to diagnose carpel tunnel syndrome. I had severe on the right hand, moderate on left hand. That report went back to my doctor, who set me up with a local surgeon who does the carpel tunnel release laproscopally, I was scheduled for surgery, it was done yesterday, also he did a release of the tendon at base of left thumb, so 3 tiny incisions. I was at the surgery center a total of 4 hours, then went home. My wrists ached and I couldn’t turn door knobs, but I could do everything else.
Yes, the nights are miserable with the numbness, tingling, stinging and swelling. At this point, splints won’t heal you up, but wearing them at night can help those awful symptoms until you can have the surgery. I can already tell the difference.
Is There Anything You Can Do To Bring More Immediate Relief?
More patients come to me convinced they know the nature of their health problem. It is not surprising because folk today ‘Google’ everything and occasionally learn more than they have to know. She went on to claim that she ‘Googled’ it and sure enough, she was definite it needed to be her problem. In a lot of ways a self-diagnosis is useful to me as an orthopedic surgeon as it quickly spells out some of the issues a patient could be having. The most powerful indicator of a difficulty is insensibility, shivering or discomfort in the hand or wrist, infrequently extending to the elbow or fingers. The still position of the wrist eases pressure and decreases the redness. If the CTS isn’t severe, a doctor might advocate a wrist splint.
A doctor can also prescribe medications for agony and swelling. This is very perilous and there is little you can do apart from surgery treatment. If you let this lengthen and don’t take any action on the pain, the insensibility can spread up to your shoulder and even to your neck. The Carpal Tunnel home-centered treatment The Massage Treatment Massaging your hands is vital for your carpal tunnel treatment. It helps to boost the blood flow in your hands. If you like a herbal cure then maybe the best herb to take is Turmeric, a standard kitchen spice, which is good for reducing soreness. Is there anything you can do to bring more fast relief? The very first thing is to assess what it is that has caused the onset of the complaint. The common dose is up to one small spoon of crushed spice each day mixed together with your principal course, or one three hundred milligram capsule containing 95 percent curcumin ( the important ingredient ) 1 to 3 times per day.
If it is typing at a keyboard then think about the peak of the keyboard compared with your own body position. It is in the employer’s best interest to listen when a worker gets an injury. It is important not to have the desk too high. There could be a few people who do not think carpal tunnel syndrome is a massive deal–but they’d be mistaken. If a worker has carpal tunnel syndrome, then how is he intending to do a job that needs continual hand movement, wrist movement or anything more along those lines? Thanks to the way scanners are situated, and due to the job itself, there’s always going to be the incessant motions, the turning of the wrist to scan a bar-code, all of the little things that will cause harsh carpal tunnel syndrome in employees who are keeping up a corner store. Thru ergonomics, special stretches and muscle balancing exercises, and implementing job revolution to stop one individual from doing way too much of one job, carpal tunnel syndrome can be stopped, which is frequently better than waiting till an honest to goodness treatment is necessary.
