Having head lice is a problem many parents will see their children suffer at least once, as is lice removal. They are highly contagious and very inconvenient but, like the chicken pox, are quite common. A louse is a parasite insect that lives on humans and feeds off their blood. The head is the most common place to live, since hair often provides excellent cover and shelter for them.

They can jump extraordinary distances, though they cannot fly. Being within three feet of someone with head lice makes you vulnerable. The bugs are so small you would probably not notice one jumping from one head to another. It also makes it difficult to tell who has head lice and who does not.

If you know someone is suffering from the problem, do not go anywhere near them until it is sorted out. Do not share anything with them or even ride in the same car, since lice can live in cloth seats. If you think you have been in contact with someone with lice, have someone else do a lice check on you by combing through your hair carefully with a plastic pick and looking for eggs or the bugs themselves.

The eggs look like grains of rice on a strand of hair. They are white and very small. Seeing just one egg means you have lice. Most grocery stores carry lice shampoo and combs in their shampoo aisles. The shampoo serves to kill all bugs wandering around, but it cannot kill the infant ones still in the eggs. This is what the comb is needed for.

The comb is extremely fine, which means that if you have long hair, it can be quite a process. It can also be painful. Comb–do not brush–out your hair first to get rid of unnecessary tangles. Clean the comb very well to make sure no eggs are on it. Then use the specific lice comb to slowly pick through the hair. This removes the eggs. After every lock of hair, clean all the eggs from the comb.

This process needs to happen at least once every day for about a week before a person can be lice free. The other very important step is to make sure you are not contaminating anything in your house, which will re-infect you after your head is clean. Anything cloth which comes into the slightest contact with the infected person should be put in a plastic bag for two full weeks. It can also be microwaved on high for a few minutes or put in the freezer for a day to kill the lice.

Children should avoid playing with stuffed animals, since they can easily spread lice around the house. Do not let your children lay on the carpet or sit on the couches. It will be an uncomfortable period, but if it is not strictly maintained, the lice will just continue to spread around the house.

If it is a boy you have with lice, you could always shave his head. This can still be as embarrassing to boys as it would be to girls, so make sure you take to your child first about it. This is the fastest way to get rid of lice, since without hair, there is no protection and no place to lay eggs.

Lice infestations can happen at any time of the year, though certain periods of a child’s school year they are more likely to occur than others. Brushes and combs also must be sterilized before being used again.

Lice shampoo can do a very effective job of destroying a lice infestation. However, shampoos do not destroy nits. Nits are the youngest or larval stage that lice have, and are attached by parents to hair follicles directly. The nits will not come off with washing. Someone will have to go through the child’s hair to remove them.

Unfortunately, nits can’t be removed simply by washing a child’s hair. They must be pulled off each hair follicle after being seen. Due to high toxicity for aquatic life, permethrin and permethrin-contaminated water should be properly disposed of. Degradation is quick and should the chemical be trashed far from any aquatic life, the negative effects would be minimized. Ideally, in a non-industrial context, the contaminant can be set in the light to induce photodegradation. Contaminated water set in direct sunlight exposure will be cleared of the permethrin and any known pollutant subproducts after a few hours.

Recently, in South Africa, residues of permethrin were found in breast milk, together with DDT, in an area that experienced DDT treatment for malaria control, as well as the use of pyrethroids in small-scale agriculture.

The use of the substance has been restricted by the US government, although such restriction is outdated now.”

Not too long after I started working here which was about 18 1/2 months ago I got a call from a mother who wanted to purchase our Liceadex lice removal gel to use on herself and her 4 daughters. Pubic lice is transmittable by human contact. I personally have a friend who has dealt with this problem before. A few years back I had a friend who once caught pubic lice from his girlfriends. It started off with just a few bites here and there. The next night it got worse and  he was constantly scratching his bottom. He scratched so much that lesions started to form. Well, the first thing  my friend and I did together was start googling to see what kind of hideous parasites he is dealing with. Sure enough, when we typed  “insects in pubic areas” the word pubic lice started to pop up. We clicked on one of the links and found some sample pictures of pubic lice that looked exactly like what he had in the jar that he was holding. I advised him, he better hurry up and go to the Doctor. As soon as he walked out, I started grabbing all kind of disinfectant sprays and started spraying down everything he touched. I started washing all of my linens that he came in contact with. I love my friend, but I don’t think, I wanted to catch crabs from him.
