Pubic lice questions
Although you can get pubic lice from your partner, pubic lice is not a sexually transmitted disease. Pubic lice bugs are small parasites that are in the same species with head lice and body lice. You can get pubic lice from being around an infected person or their belongings for a long period of time. It is transferred by physical contact. You can also get them from staying in a hotel, motel or even at your friend’s house. Anyone can get pubic lice if you come in contact with the pesky lice bugs or eggs. They do not care about your gender, sex, nationality or social classification.
“What do pubic lice look like?” is a question that I am often asked. Pubic lice are very small but you can see them with the naked eye. They are shaped to look similar to a crab, that is how they got their nickname,”crabs”. You can check our pictures of pubic lice.
Another question that I am often asked is “What are the signs and symptoms of crabs?” Well just like having head lice, you can feel the crawling, biting and itching sensations. With pubic lice you will experience these symptoms around the genitals and anus. Because the itching with lice is so intense, people have been known to scratch so much they cause lesions and sores on the skin. Most people describe the experience with crabs as unbearable.
Some pubic lice prevention tips that you can use are as follows:
*Bring your own blanket and vinyl or plastic mattress cover with you when sleeping away from home.
*Don’t share anything, especially clothing with other people.
*Disinfect any public toilets or chairs before sitting on them.
