The scientific name for head louse is Pediculus humanus capitis. Another name for infestation with Head Lice is pediculosis.

Head lice develop in three forms: nits, nymphs, and adults.

Nits: Nits are Head Lice eggs. They are hard to see and are often mistaken for dandruff or droplets of hairspray. Nits are found firmly attached to the hair shaft. They are oval and usually yellow to white. Nits take about 1 week to hatch.

Nymphs: Nits hatch into nymphs. Nymphs are immature adult Head Lice. Nymphs mature into adults about 7 days after hatching. To live, nymphs must feed on blood.

Adults: An adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed, has six legs, and is tan to greyish- white. In persons with dark hair, adult lice will look darker. Adult lice can live up to 30 days on a person’s head. To live, adult lice need to feed on blood. If a louse falls off a person, it dies within 2 days.

Head Lice?

Some things that worked for me…(being a preschool teacher)

they sell stuff called cholestrol in the conditioner aisle of drug store.
…or super market….it comes in a tub…
*apply this to dry hair….comb thru…leave on for 8-12 hours..then rinse out with hot water..(in shower)…and comb it while rinsing….this will usually suffocate them..as well as leave your hair a little oily….but not as bad as other remedies…

Use a cat flea comb….to comb your hair…(new of course) for a fine haired cat

Another idea is use cheap hair conditioner….

the saying is..if your hair is oily..lice will tend not to go on your head..since they can’t hang on to oily hair strands..if you have squeaky clean hair..more likely you can get them..from someone else…and they don’t jump..they crawl

I know shaving that area doesn’t get rid of the problem, but can it keep you from getting it in the first place?

You contract pubic lice from “intimate contact” with someone who has pubic lice. You can also contract pubic lice from using an infested towel.

Since pubic lice can also inhabit the scalp at the back of the head and around the ears, as well as coarsely-haired areas like beards, mustaches, and legs, you may be able to get them from upholstery and pillows.

Numerous/sHead Lice Treatment

A great number of lice treatment treatments you might have used don’t kill lice at all, they rely on lubrication and pulling a nit comb through the hair to physically remove the lice. A lot of others use harmful pesticides and poisonous concentrations of oils which are proven ineffective against lice and very dangerous to you and your children. As previously mentioned, a lot of treatments require dragging a nit comb through the infested person’s hair to break the strong nit glue bonds, and lift the <a href="http://allstop.
This is a very painful process because the hair shafts will usually come out of the head before the nit glue bonds will break from the hair.

Side Effects of Some/sHead Lice Treatment

Many effective treatments are created to destroy the nit glue that attaches Lice eggs onto our hair. The Lice and nits fall from the hair shaft, therefore negating the need for painful nit combs and the troublesome Lice removal processes. However, this does not imply you shouldn’t use a fine-toothed comb to remove the loose debris such as dead lice and unhatched eggs out of the hair when treating and rinsing. It’s imperative to carry out a thorough inspection to ensure you did not miss any nits.

All About Head Lice Treatments

Head lice are a common, controversial and frustrating problem for parents. And the controversy isn’t usually about where they got infected, but instead revolves around how you are going to get rid of the lice.
.

On one side of the debate are the people who believe that Head Lice have developed resistance to regular head lice treatments, so that they no longer work. Other experts believe that resistance is not a big problem, and treatment failures are because parents didn’t remove the nits or that the child was misdiagnosed.

Head Lice Symptoms

The main symptom of a Head Lice infestation is an itchy scalp from the bites of the lice. These bites can then become infected, and may appear red or crusty, and may lead to your child developing swollen lymph glands in his neck.

The Best Head Lice Treatment

In addition to having the symptoms listed above, children with Head Lice will have gray or reddish brown live Head Lice scurrying around their scalp. Lice are small, about the size of a sesame seed, and although they don’t fly or hop, they can crawl very fast, making them hard to spot.

Another sign that can help you make the diagnosis, is finding nits, or lice eggs, attached to your child’s hair. Nits are small, oval shaped and usually a yellowish-white color and are firmly attached to the side of hair shafts. If you confirm that your child does have live lice or nits, it is important that you don’t panic about your child’s Head Lice.

Head Lice Treatments

The main head lice treatments for Head Lice usually involve using a Head Lice shampoo, like: Head Lice Dr, and then patiently and diligently removing nits with a lice comb. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for whatever products you choose to use.

For light infestations or if you are uncomfortable using an anti-lice shampoo, you can try to simply remove the live lice and nits manually or use a full-service company that is dedicated to the detection and removal of Head Lice.

As there are often a lot of nits on a child and they are hard to find and remove, you may continue to find nits for days after Head Lice treatments. This doesn’t mean that the Head Lice treatments didn’t work. If you continue to find live lice after treating with a anti-lice shampoo then that likely does mean that it didn’t work or your child was reinfected.

Also be sure to wash your child’s clothing and bedding in hot water and vacuum to remove lice and nits from furniture, carpets, stuffed animals, etc. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you really only have to clean “items, clothing, furniture, or carpeting that have been in contact with the head of the person with infestation in the 24 to 48 hours before treatment,” and not everything in your house though. And you can put anything that you can’t wash in a large plastic bag for a few weeks if you are really concerned that it is infested.

What You Need To Know Don’t Panic About Head Lice – Unfortunately, the first reaction for many parents in dealing with Head Lice is to panic. Panicking is not going to kill the Head Lice though and will likely lead to over-treatment and anxiety in your child who may be concerned that they have “bugs” in their hair. Nits hatch in 7 to 10 days and develop into an adult in another 7 to 10 days which can then lay more (up to 100) eggs. So it is important to remove all of the nits to break this cycle. Also, since anti-lice shampoos don’t usually kill nits, you have to usually retreat the child in 7 to 10 days to kill any newly hatched lice. Children are often misdiagnosed with Head Lice because they have hair casts that resemble nits, or they have dead or empty nits that are far away from the scalp. If you think your child has lice but you don’t actually see any live lice, see your Pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Be careful before trying ‘alternative’ treatments, like mayonaise, vaseline, olive oil or Tea tree oil. Although they are ‘natural’ treatments, they are untested, and products like mayonaise can be hard to get out of a child’s hair (dishwashing is supposed to make it easier though). Alternative medications for resistant lice might include Ovide (malathion, an insecticide), Lindane, the antibiotic Bactrim (which kills symbiotic bacteria inside the lice), Ivermectim, or using Elimite, a stronger version of Nix which is usually used to treat scabies. Viq (Benzyl Alcohol Lotion 5%) was recently approved to treat children over six months of age with Head Lice. Question by Buce B: Do you think it’s wrong to put “head lice” on someone without them knowing it?
No saying I would do that. It’s just a hypothetical question.

Best answer:

Answer by Joannakathryn
Absolutely, it’s wrong.

Give your answer to this question below!

Signs of Head Lice

Although very small, head lice can be seen with the naked eye. What you or your doctor can see by examining in depth the head of his son: Head Lice eggs (called nits). These look like tiny yellow, tan or brown points before they hatch. Head Lice lay nits on hair shafts near the scalp, where the temperature is perfect for keeping warm until they hatch. Nit is a bit like dandruff, only they can not be removed by brushing or shaking them.
Unless the infestation is heavy, it is more common to see nits are child’s hair than it is to see live Head Lice crawling on the scalp. Head Lice eggs hatch within 1-2 weeks after they are under. After hatching, the remaining shell looks white or clear, and remains firmly attached to the hair. This is the stage where it is easier to identify because their hair grow long and the shell is moving away from the scalp.

Adult head lice and nymphs (baby lice). Adult Head Lice are larger than sesame seeds and has gray-white or pink. Nymphs are smaller and become adult lice about 1-2 weeks after they hatch. Most lice feed on blood several times a day, but they can live for up to 2 days off the scalp.
