What home remedies have you used on Poison Ivy?
Poison Ivy Home Remedies
Did it help provide relief? Did it help dry it up?
There are no effective home remedies IMHO.
Benadryl and cortisone are the recognized Poison Ivy treatments. Calamine lotion is a total waste of time & money.
Coincidentally, I have just been exposed to Poison Ivy for the first time in my life. Like the fellow above, I thought I was immune. Immunity has more to do with the degree of contamination than anything else. Some folks can just walk near it without direct contact and get a rash, while others can literally sleep in it without so much as a bump. It has to do with the amount of melatonin (pigmentation) in your skin.
FYI, anecdotal evidence suggesting that the resulting poison ivy rash can not spread after the initial contact has been thoroughly cleaned is WRONG WRONG WRONG.
Effects of Poison Ivy
A certain amount of Urushiol (the compound found in poison ivy, oak, and sumac) bonds to the skin which causes the leisons. A small amount leeches into the skin and is contained inside the blister. If you scratch it or pop the blister the resulting ooze is contaminated with Urushiol and WILL cause a certain amount of spreading. Most spreading comes from contaminated fingernails. Trim them as short as possible and clean them with an old toothbrush and soap, rinse & repeat.
I have received some relief by using corn starch (talcum powder) after bathing. It keeps the skin dry and relieves the itching – somewhat. Good luck & DON’T SCRATCH!
