What is the best home remedy for poison ivy? I am pregnant, so there is a lot I can’t take – medicine wise.
Treating Poison Ivy Exposures
If you are exposed, according to the FDA, you should quickly (within 10 minutes):
first, cleanse exposed areas with rubbing alcohol.
next, wash the exposed areas with water only (no soap yet, since soap can move the urushiol, which is the oil from the poison ivy that triggers the rash, around your body and actually make the reaction worse).
now, take a shower with soap and warm water.
lastly, put gloves on and wipe everything you had with you, including shoes, tools, and your clothes, with rubbing alcohol and water.
Unfortunately, if you wait more than 10 minutes, the urushiol will likely stay on your skin and trigger the poison ivy rash. You may not be able to stop it on your skin, but you might still scrub your nails and wipe off your shoes, etc., so that you don’t spread the urushiol to new areas.
Commercial products, like Zanfel, Ivy Cleanse Towelettes, and Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub, are also available over-the-counter, if you don’t want to use rubbing alcohol.
Remember that poison ivy isn’t contagious though, so touching the rash won’t actually spread it.
Since your kids get poison ivy a lot, having a ‘poison ivy action kit’ ready, with rubbing alcohol, a large bottle of water, and some soap, might be a good idea. Since rubbing alcohol can be poisonous, children should be supervised with it though and it is not something you should send off into the woods with them.
Preventing Poison Ivy
In addition to getting rid of poison ivy when you find it, you can avoid poison ivy by:
wearing long pants and a shirt with long sleeves, boots and gloves when your kids will be most at risk, especially when playing in wooden areas, around lakes, or going on hikes
apply Ivy-Block to exposed areas

Poison ivy rash that has not gone away after treatment from Dr?
I recently came in contact with poison ivy. For the first time I developed a rash from the poison ivy. It became so bad and spread over my arm, both legs and almost all of my torso that I made a trip to the ER. I was given a shot and a prescription for prednisone. It was seeming to get better. After completing the 7 days of prednisone I still have a rash on my stomach and my arms. They are on new areas than before I took my meds. It itches like crazy and seems to be getting worse. What is going on? Should I make another trip to the Dr’s or wait?
Also the rash looks a little different. It is more just red and irritated.
I personally too have a “first time” reaction to posion Ivy. I have been to 2 ER’s and have been been put on Kefflex first and Prednisone the second, so now I have a appointment today for the shot. It started out as two bumbs and then they got all oozey and spread to more bumps that did the same. The funny thing is that those initial 2 have dried up even though they left scars, now it seems to have spread more on dfferent parts of my arms in a red swollen rashes and to the other arm as well. I know that this dose’nt actually give you any help but I will keep you informed as what my doctor says. I read that if you have suddend reddness and swelling that you are considered to having a severe reaction rather than the normal reaction. More to come this afternoon.

Any home remedies that really work for poison Ivy?
It’s not a home remedy but the product Tech-Nu works well. I have used it and depending on how severe the rash was it might take a few days to heal but it stops the itch. There is an alternative product “Zanfel” that cost more but did not work as well for me.

Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub is different from other products on the market in two ways.
First, it gets to the root of the problem by removing an ultra-potent and toxic substance called “urushiol” (ooh-roo-she-all) from the skin. Urushiol comes from the poison oak, poison ivy and sumac plants and attaches to the skin. It is the source of the poison ivy rash, irritation and spreading.
In addition, Tecnu Extreme contains an active ingredient to relieve itching fast!
Poison ivy treatment?
I have this rash on my ankle that i think is either poison ivy or poison sumac and ive tried calamine lotion and a bunch of other things but none of them really seem to help. what should i use or do?
you need a steroid. the highest concentration you can buy at the grocery store is 1% hydrocortizone. a doctor must write you a higher strength. try the other one first & don’t take hot showers/baths.
benedryl should help w/ the itching or claritin if the former makes you drowsy.

does anybody know an effective home remedy for poison ivy?
i have poison ivy and i want it to go away!
Over the counter Benadryl or its generic form which is cheaper. Take it every four hours. It takes about 10 days for poison ivy to go away. Try putting some vinegar on it. It helps with the itching. So does a vinegar and baking soda paste. Put it on and let it dry. It doesn’t look or smell pretty but if the itching is bad enough, I wouldn’t care.
