Hey, my boyfriends got really bad poison ivy, did a home remedy with baking soda?

My Story - I made a paste with baking soda.. the site said to wait til it dries, and then rinse it off with warm water and soap…

Its on right now, and he said its the only time that it hasn’t itched, and he wants to keep it on.

Should i rinse it off, or keep it on? does it matter?

If it’s been 10 mins or less since exposure-clean the area with rubbing alcohol. this will help stop the skin from reacting to the urishol (the oil in the poison ivy that causes the reaction)

otherwise do the following (keep in mind that reactions might take up to 2 weeks to heal completely)
-wash with water ONLY. soap will only move the urishol to other parts of the body and cause the reaction to get worse

-once you’ve rinsed the effected area with water-you can then shower using soap

-taking an oatmeal bath. put 2 cups of plain, instant or old-fashioned oats into a blender in ground into a fine powder. pour oatmeal under warm running bath water. soak for at least 30 mins

-placing ice (in a bag first) over the blisters will help relieve the itch.

-apply cold washcloth compresses to the blisters. use a fan to dry them off-the air will help dry the blisters out and soothe the itching

-calamine lotion can be applied to blisters

-take oral benadryl at night (or during the day only if you can sleep-it will make you drowsy). take 1-2 of the 25mg tablets every 6 hours as needed but no more than 4 doses in 24 hours.

-don’t apply food products,oils,regular lotions, or creams to the blisters-these can react with the urishol and make the reaction worse.

Make sure to wash all clothing,shoes,or anything else you touched after you reacted otherwise the urishol will stay on these objects and can you will react again.
