The term “ringworm” or “ringworms” is a fungal infection that is on the surface of the skin. The infection is not due to a worm. Ringworm is a fungus infection in the skin.

Most of the skin fungi produce round spots on the skin, but many do not. It’s not uncommon for ringworm to be mis diagnosed as a dermatitis rash or eczema therefore it is important to see pictures of ringworm to determine if you really have ringworm.

The medical term for ringworm is tinea. (Tinea is the Latin name for a growing worm.) The tinea fungus can grown any place on the body such as the head, feet, groin area or any other place.  Doctors add another word to indicate where the fungus is located.

Pictures of Ringworm can show what the different fungus infections look like.  Tinea capitis, for instance, refers to scalp ringworm, tinea corporis to fungus of the body, tinea pedis to fungus of the feet, tinea capitis is fungus on the head, tinea barbae is a fungal infection in the beard area, tinea cruris is fungus in the groin area, tinea faciei is fungus on the face and tinea manus is a fungal infection similar to athlete’s foot  on the hands and palms.

Ringworm Symptoms

Ringworm symptoms are first identified by a very itchy rash. It often makes a pattern in the shape of a ring and the outside of the circle is usually raised and redder than the inside. Pictures of ringworm could help you determine if you have ringworm.  Sometimes the ringworm sore it is just a red, itchy rash.

Jock itch is another form of ringworm and it is a rash in the skin folds of the groin. It may also spread to the inner thighs or buttocks and is common on both men and women.  Jock itch is very contagious and is also spread to the groin area by simply putting on your underwear if a person has athletes foot.

Athlete’s foot is also another symptom of ringworm; but the inflammation, cracking and burning is primarily on the bottom of the feet and between the toes.

Most ringworm of the skin can be treated at home with fungal creams you can buy without a prescription. Your rash may clear up soon after you start your ringworm treatment, but it’s important to keep using the cream for as long as the label says. This will help keep the infection from coming back.

If ringworm is not treated, your skin could blister, and the cracks could become infected with bacteria. If this happens, you will need antibiotics.

Ringworm Prevention for People and Pets

Preventing ringworm is as simple as washing your hands. After you come in contact with pets or farm animals, it’s a good idea to wash your hands. In addition to ringworm, pets can carry other serious diseases that affect humans. They can vary by breed but include things like salmonella, toxoplasmosis ( which is particularly harmful to pregnant women) and of course rabies, which is prevalent in many species of animals, and can affect humans. But simply by washing your hands, you can do a lot to stop the spread of these diseases in addition to ringworm.

If someone you know or one of your pets contracts ringworm, it’s important to avoid contact with the lesions. Ringworm and pets go hand in hand. Touching the lesions or rashes caused by ringworm is one of the primary ways to spread it.

The fungus that causes ringworm can live on surfaces for some time, and while the person who is infected with it should be taking steps to prevent spreading it, it is possible to get ringworm from things like chairs and tables. To learn how long can ringworm live on the furniture, keep reading. All surfaces and furniture should be disinfected after contact, using hospital grade disinfectant cleaner.

Anything that can be washed in the washing machine should be, using hot water and germicidal bleach if possible. Don’t share personal items such as clothing, socks, shoes, hats, hair brushes and combs, bedding, towels or anything else that comes in direct contact with the body.

Bleach is NOT a Home Remedy for Ringworm

We learned the other day that people have the misconception that bleach can cure ringworm. Continue reading below to understand why you should not use bleach.

Bleach is not a home remedy for ringworm; in fact it’s toxic!  Don’t try this at home! Everyone’s skin has different degrees of sensitivity and applying bleach directly to your skin can leave you with a terrible chemical burn while opening up your ringworm blisters to further infection. Different people may claim that using bleach has cleared up their ringworm lesions and stopped the itching, but don’t consider trying this foolish home remedy. You will probably end up with far worse than itching – a big, oozing sore, or worse, or a nasty chemical burn.

The truth of the matter is if they indeed did get rid of their ringworm, what actually happened was that they chemically burned it off the skin.  We can assure you that they were left with another type of skin lesion they had to heal.

Ringworm Fungus Treatment

Tea Tree Oil Effective with Ringworm

There are a few things you can do at home to ease the ringworm symptoms until you find a solution and we just wanted to share this information with you.  It is actually stuff that you have right there at your home.

Tea Tree Oil:
Tea Tree oil may be applied to the parts with ringworm spots. It will help with the itch and reduce infection from scratching.

Mudpack:
A light mudpack applied over the areas of the ringworm is also helpful. It will keep the sores dry.

Vinegar:
Vinegar applied to the skin will reduce the itching and it draws the ringworm closer to the skin surface.  Although it will change the chemistry of the skin and make the ringworm lighter, it will not make it completely go away.

We hope these tips that we have been sending you are helping.  Just let us know if we can help you.
