Affordable Scabies Treatment
I don’t have any health insurance at the moment so I cannot afford to go see a physician. What are some ways that I can reduce or eliminate the problem without having to go see a physician? with at home remedies or at my local store without having to have a prescription?
If you can purchase permethrin 5% cream from your local pharmacy, do so. Everyone in your household must be treated simultaneously even if if that person has no symptoms. And if you’re able to find it OTC (and I believe it’s now sold by prescription and OTC), buy one 60 gram tube for each member of your household. Plan to remain indoors until the 12 hour treatment is completed.
12-Hour Scabies Treatment
This is how you should use it:
1. Everyone must shower well and dry off.
2. Apply the entire tube to all skin from the neck down. If there is any rash at the hairline, apply it there too. Pay attention to skin folds and skin between fingers and toes. Use the entire tube! Dress in clean clothing.
3. Leave the permethrin cream on for 12 hours. Instructions will say 8-10 hours but 12 is better. Plan the application around this time frame.
4. Wash all recently worn clothing & used bedding and towels in hot water and dry on high heat. If you use a laundromat, place these items in trash bags and close them tightly until they can be cleaned.
5. Vacuum all carpets, rugs and fabric furniture. Vacuum your mattresses and pillows. If stuffed toys can be washed, do so. Otherwise, place in plastic bags for 2 weeks. Vacuum car floor mats and seats.
6. After 12 hours, shower off permethrin 5% cream thoroughly.
The strength of the permethrin cream MUST be 5%. A lesser strength will not eliminate the mites and you cannot use 10% and “dilute” it. The rash and itchiness may take up to 2 weeks to resolve. Oral antihistamines can help relieve some or most of the intense itching. Most of the time, if this is done correctly one treatment is all that’s needed but if after 2 weeks, you find no difference in your symptoms, repeat the entire treatment from step 1 to step 6.
