Arthritis Symptoms
Arthritis symptoms consists of a group of over 100 diseases and conditions that cause inflammation, pain, swelling and stiffness in joints. Arthritis is one of the most pervasive diseases in the United States, affecting one out of every 3 Americans (an estimated 70 million people). The two most common types of Arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis affects an estimated 21 million adults in the United States. It is often caused by stress on already damaged joints. As the cartilage that protects the bone breaks down, the ends of the bones begin to rub together, causing pain. It most commonly affects joints in the fingers, knees, hips and spine; however, it may also affect the wrists, elbows, shoulder and ankles.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammation of the joint lining, causing pain, stiffness, swelling, burning and redness. It affects approximately 2.1 million Americans and is 2 to 3 times more common in women than men. The onset of rheumatoid arthritis usually starts between the ages of 40 to 50 in most cases.
Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms are most noticable on the hands of older sufferers. Advanced stages include joint deformities, rheumatoid nodules and servere pain.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic and degenerative disease of the joints and there is no surefire cure. A common characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms is periods of worsening pain then remission of pain.
